After the tragic death of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl decided in 1994 to bounce back and build a new project. He brought together old songs written during his years with Nirvana, then added a few new ones to make a first album, which he released under the name Foo Fighters. The eponymous album, released in 1995, appeared to some as a short-lived solo project, with Grohl alone at the controls and playing all the instruments.
Eventually, Grohl decided to make Foo Fighters a band in its own right. In 1995, guitarist Pat Smear joined the band along with Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums). This line-up recorded the band's second album, The Colour and the Shape, released in 1997. The album included some of Foo Fighters' best-known songs, such as 'Everlong', 'My Hero' and 'Monkey Wrench'. However, internal tensions led to the departure of drummer William Goldsmith during the recording sessions. Taylor Hawkins stepped in, solidifying the line-up that would remain in place for years to come.
The following albums were released at a steady rate of one every three years, with success that would never be denied, each time resulting in singles that exceeded a hundred million listens on Spotify. 'Learn To Fly' for the album 'There's Nothing To Lose' (1999), 'All My Life' on 'One By One' (2002), 'Best Of You' on 'In Your Honor' (2005), 'Walk' on 'Wasting Light' (2011) and 'Run' on 'Concrete And Gold' (2017).
"Sonic Highways" in 2014 is a project of its own in the Foo Fighters discography, in which the band recorded eight songs in eight studios across the United States, each influenced by the musical history of the city concerned. An eight-part documentary series will accompany the release of the album and will be broadcast on HBO.
A year after the release of "Medicine at Midnight" in 2021, Taylor Hawkins died in his hotel room in Bogota, Colombia, just before a concert. Two tribute concerts were organised before the band announced that they would continue their career despite the tragedy. "But Here We Are" was thus released in 2023 with Dave Grohl on drums.

DID YOU KNOW?
The name "Foo Fighters" comes from a term used by Second World War pilots to describe unidentified aerial phenomena during flights.
In March 2016, the band announced that they were parting ways with Dave Grohl. Eventually the news was denied, with the band admitting that it was a gag that they staged following a rumour.
The Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including 5 in the "Best Rock Album" category, and have sold 12 million albums in the United States alone. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 30 October 2021.
