System of a Down (often abbreviated to SOAD) is not your average heavy metal band. Formed in 1994 in Glendale, California, this Armenian-American band has become famous for its music, which is unlike any other, alternating between aggressive riffs and more soaring motifs, with vocals that can go from melody to scream in a second.
The band's roots go back to an earlier group called Soil, made up of Tankian and Daron Malakian, the band's guitarist and co-vocalist. Joined by bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan (both of Armenian descent like the other members), System of a Down began to make a name for themselves on the Los Angeles underground scene.
Their 1998 self-titled debut album brought them moderate success. Tracks like "Sugar" (later to become an iconic song along with "Chop Suey!") and the frenetic "Spiders" gave them radio airplay and a devoted fan base, thanks in no small part to the band's energetic live shows.
System of a Down really exploded with the release of their second album, "Toxicity", in 2001. Fueled by the Grammy-nominated title track and the introspective "Aerials", the album became a worldwide success, topping the Billboard charts and cementing their place as one of the most innovative and important bands of the early 21st century.
Their lyrics, often written by Tankian, tackle a variety of complex subjects. The songs speak out against war ("B.Y.O.B."), prohibition ("Prison Song") and violence ("Violent Pornography"). Their heritage has also influenced their music, with tracks like "P.L.U.C.K." (Politically Lying, Unholy, Cowardly Killers), which deals with the Armenian genocide.
The band continued to produce critically acclaimed albums throughout the 2000s, including "Steal This Album! (2002), "Mesmerize" (2005) and "Hypnotize" (2005). Both "Mesmerize" and "Hypnotize" reached number one, testifying to the band's continued commercial success.
In the late 2000s, tensions within the band began to mount, leading to an indefinite hiatus in 2006. Despite rumors of a definitive split, System of a Down reformed for a series of tours in the years that followed. It remains to be seen whether they will record any new albums, but it's certain that their legacy will live on whatever their future holds.
