Page Hamilton formed Helmet in New York in 1989. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Hamilton was a talented guitarist who had previously played with bands such as Band of Susans and Glenn Branca. He recruited bassist Henry Bogdan, guitarist Peter Mengede and drummer John Stanier to complete the band's original line-up. Together, they began composing songs that would define Helmet's distinctive sound, a blend of alternative rock, metal and noise rock.
Their first album, "Strap It On", was released in 1990 and immediately caught the attention of the underground scene. Their second album, "Meantime" (1992), was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 68 on the Billboard 200 and being certified gold. He also produced the hit single 'Unsung', which received widespread radio airplay and helped popularize the band.
Over the years, Helmet has continued to explore new musical territory. The band experimented with elements of jazz, post-rock and electronica on albums such as "Aftertaste" (1997) and "Size Matters" (2004). However, internal tensions led to line-up changes and a temporary split in 1998. Helmet reformed in 2004 and has since released several albums, including "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010) and "Dead to the World" (2016) and "Left" (2023), their latest to date.
