Avantasia is a symphonic metal and power metal project initiated by German musician Tobias Sammet. Born on 21 November 1977 in Fulda, Germany, Tobias Sammet is best known as the lead singer of power metal band Edguy, but he has also developed a solo career with Avantasia, which has become a major and much-loved project in the genre.
The story of Avantasia began in 2000, when Tobias Sammet decided to make his dream of an Opera Metal band come true. He collaborated with various renowned artists from the heavy metal scene to bring his project to life. The resulting album, entitled "The Metal Opera", was released in 2001 to positive reviews from fans and critics alike. The album features an epic story and songs that combine elements of symphonic metal, power metal and hard rock.
What sets Avantasia apart is the collaborative nature of the project. Tobias Sammet regularly invites many renowned singers and musicians to take part in the recordings and concerts. Contributors include Michael Kiske (formerly of Helloween), Jørn Lande, Bob Catley (Magnum), Geoff Tate (formerly of Queensrÿche), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), and many more.
Building on the success of "The Metal Opera", Tobias Sammet decided to pursue the Avantasia project. In 2002, he released the sequel to the album, "The Metal Opera Part II", which continued the story and expanded the world of Avantasia. Subsequent albums, such as "The Scarecrow" (2008), "The Mystery of Time" (2013), "Ghostlights" (2016) and "Moonglow" (2019), consolidated Avantasia's reputation as an ambitious and enduring musical project. "A Paranormal Evening With The Moonflower Society", released in 2022, is their most direct album, but still faithful to the original concept.

 The name "Avantasia" is a combination of the words "avalon" (the name of the legendary island in Arthurian mythology) and "fantasia" (which evokes imagination and creativity).
When Tobias Sammet launched Avantasia, he initially planned to make a single solo album. However, the success of this first album led to the creation of a larger-scale project.
