Thomas Youngblood and drummer Richard Warner founded Kamelot in Tampa, Florida, in 1991. In 1994, they signed a contract with Noise Records, and their debut album, Eternity, was released the following August. The press immediately saw it as a promising debut. The following album, "Dominion", was released in 1996, and was even more diverse and varied than their debut.
In 1997, drummer Richard Warner and singer Mark Vanderbilt had to be replaced. Kamelot found more than just replacements in Casey Grillo and former Conception member, singer Roy Khan, who joined the band during the production of the third album, "Siege Perilous". The new line-up toured Europe in the autumn of the same year, returning to Wolfsburg's Gate Studio just twelve months later to produce their fourth album, "The Fourth Legacy", considered one of their finest productions.
The summer of 2000 saw the band embark on the New Allegeance tour of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Spain, during which the recordings for Kamelot's first live album, "The Expedition", were made. Only a few months later, the band presented its fifth album, "Karma", which soon takes Khan, Youngblood, Grillo and Barry on a new European tour.
"Epica" arrived in 2003, and combined all the strengths of previous productions with new ideas and majestic sounds. It was followed by a further headline tour of Europe, Japan, Mexico and the USA, as well as several festival headline appearances.
In 2005, "The Black Halo" added a new chapter to the Kamelot story. The sequel to their Faust adaptation about the battle between good and evil, which began with the previous album, once again combined Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's opus with the band's personal point of view and experience. The videos for 'The Haunting' and 'March Of Mephisto' became major hits on Youtube and prompted the band to launch their own YouTube channel, called KamTV. The initial launch of KamTV propelled the band into the Top 10 music channels on YouTube, and number one for metal across all genres. With the release of "The Black Halo", Kamelot began a new headlining tour of Europe, North America, Japan and Brazil, as well as numerous festivals around the world.
Following on from the success of this album, Kamelot recorded their first live DVD: One Cold Winter's Night. The Oslo concert was recorded by Revolver Films and director Patrick Ullaeus. The DVD was immediately acclaimed by press and fans alike, and set a new standard for DVDs of its kind.
In 2011, Khan announced his departure from Kamelot for personal reasons. The band then recruited Swedish singer Tommy Karevik, who brought a fresh, modern approach to their music. Karevik's powerful, expressive voice blends perfectly with Kamelot's characteristic symphonic style. The first album with their new singer, "Silverthorn", was released the following year and was very well received by fans.
This was followed by "Haven" (2015), "The Shadow Theory" (2018) and finally "The Awakening" in 2023, considered by Younglbood to be the band's most diverse work.
