DARIALYS - 05.11.2023
As a young musician, Steven Wilson launched his career under the pseudonym Porcupine Tree. Solo, he recorded several cassettes in a very atmospheric style. His first breakthrough came with the release of his debut album "On The Sunday Of Life..." in 1992. With "Up The Downstair" a year later, the multi-instrumentalist confirms his taste for psychedelic rock and space rock, in a very soaring vein.

1993 was a major year for Porcupine Tree, who became a band in their own right with the arrival of Colin Edwin on bass, Chris Maitland on drums and Richard Barberi on keyboards. The band's potential was real, and an embryo of success gradually took shape. In 1995, with their third album, "The Sky Moves Sideways", still in the same vein as Pink Floyd, the quartet refined their musical direction around increasingly solid tracks. While "Signify" seemed to reveal a more rock direction, a few years later it was pop that took over the British repertoire with two excellent albums, "Stupid Dream" and "Lightbulb Sun", released at the end of the last century. The band's popularity was taking off in earnest, but this was only the beginning.

The year 2002 marks a turning point in the band's history, with the departure of Chris Maitland behind the drums, in favor of Gavin Harrison. This line-up change coincided with the release of "In Absentia", a progressive metal album. One album followed another, and Porcupine Tree enjoyed their glory years with a successful blend of rock and progressive metal. "The band signed to Roadrunner Records in 2006 and released "Fear Of A Blank Planet" a year later. This was clearly Porcupine Tree's heyday.

At the same time, Steven Wilson released his first solo album, Insurgentes, in 2008. The band's tenth and final album, "The Incident", came out a year later, but was less transcendent than the last few excellent albums. After this opus, Steven Wilson chose to dedicate himself to his solo career, while the other band members pursued other projects. Much to the despair of their fans, Porcupine Tree went on indefinite hiatus until 12 years later, when the band reformed to release "Closure/Continuation" in 2022, the album everyone had hoped for but never expected.

DID YOU KNOW?

Originally, Porcupine Tree was Steven Wilson's "imaginary" solo project, conceived as a joke before becoming a real band in its own right.

One of the band's original members, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, is also known for having been a member of the 1980s new wave band Japan.

In addition to being the leader of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson is also a renowned producer. He has worked with many other artists, including Opeth, Anathema, Marillion and Blackfield.
