Formed in 2000 by Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson, Blackfield is the result of a collaboration between two men attracted by the classic rock of the 60s and 70s. They ended up composing their first song under the name Blackfield. The band made their live debut in Israel in early 2004 and embarked on a European tour the same year.
Initially, both partners contributed equally to the songwriting. From 2009 onwards, Geffen took on the lead role. Recent Blackfield albums include special guests Vincent Cavanagh, Brett Anderson (Suede) and Jonathan Donahue, production work by Trevor Horn and collaborations with Alan Parsons.
Geffen has characterised the band's sound as "a mixed bag, it's metal, prog, pop". Blackfield has a particular sound because it's a really strange collaboration. I don't come from the prog scene, I come from the indie rock, pop scene". The band's musical influences include Jim Morrison, Radiohead, King Crimson, Genesis and Pink Floyd.
The original line-up included Aviv Geffen (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Steven Wilson (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Chris Maitland (drums, percussion). The band's line-up has evolved over the years. In addition to Geffen and Wilson, current members include Tomer Z (drums, percussion), Adar Green (bass guitar), Eran Mitelman (piano, keyboards) and Omri Agmon (guitars).
