LYNOTT - 23.02.2024
UFO, born in 1969 from the musical aspirations of Phil Mogg, Mick Bolton, Pete Way and Andy Parker, has had a long and eventful history. After starting out as "Hocus Pocus", they adopted the name "UFO" as a tribute to a London club. Initial success with albums such as "UFO 1" and "Flying" was mixed.

The arrival of Michael Schenker in 1973 marked a turning point for the band. His talent as a guitarist brought a more assertive rock energy. The albums "Phenomenon", "Force It" and "No Heavy Petting" propelled UFO to recognition in England and the United States. The high point came with "Lights Out" in 1977, regarded as a masterpiece of 70s rock. "Obsession" and the live album "Strangers in the Night" confirmed their popularity.

However, internal tensions led to Schenker's departure in 1979. Despite numerous attempts, UFO were unable to recapture their former success. Splits and reformations punctuated the 80s and 90s, and albums such as "High Stakes & Dangerous Men" and "Walk on Water" were released, but Schenker's comings and goings created constant instability.

The 2000s saw new attempts at reformation and UFO produced albums like "Covenant" and "Sharks" without recapturing the magic of yesteryear. In 2004, the band welcomed guitarist Vinnie Moore and drummer Jason Bonham. The return of Andy Parker and the release of "The Monkey Puzzle" gave the band a new lease of life, and they continued to release an album every three years, with varying degrees of success.

Phil Mogg announced his retirement in 2018 before embarking on a tour to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary. Sadly, keyboardist Paul Raymond died in 2019, followed by bassist Pete Way in 2020. A heart attack in 2022 forced Mogg to cancel his farewell tour, leaving UFO's future uncertain. The band continues to tour with Neil Carter replacing Raymond, but with Mogg's imminent retirement, the fate of the band remains to be determined.
