Journey was formed in 1973 when guitarist Neal Schon, fresh from working for Carlos Santana, teamed up with keyboardist Gregg Rolie, singer Robert Fleischman, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Prairie Prince. Their fusion of rock, blues and jazz influences quickly won them a loyal following in the Bay Area.
In 1975, the band released their eponymous debut album, featuring a mix of hard rock and pop influences. Although their early albums were critically acclaimed, it was the arrival of lead singer Steve Perry in 1977 that truly propelled Journey to superstar status. Thanks to his haunting vocals and Schon's guitar work, the band's sound quickly evolved into a blend of AOR, pop and ballads.
Their 1978 album, "Infinity", marked a turning point in the band's career, with the hits 'Wheel in the Sky' and 'Lights'. But Journey's real commercial breakthrough came in 1981 with the release of the album "Escape", which spawned the timeless anthem 'Don't Stop Believin', a song that transcended generations and became a cultural phenomenon.
Throughout the 1980s, Journey continued to produce chart-topping hits, including 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)' from the 1983 album "Frontiers" and 'Be Good to Yourself' from the 1986 album "Raised on Radio".
Despite internal conflicts and personnel changes, Journey has never stopped producing albums to this day. A succession of singers have joined the band, including Steve Auguri, Jeff Scott Soto and the Filipino Arnel Pineda, the band's current lead singer. Always faithful to their preferred style, the Americans regularly offered quality albums until 2011, the year that marked the start of a long silence of almost 11 years, finally broken by the arrival of "Freedom" in 2022, considered to be Journey's best album since "Frontiers".
