After considering calling themselves "Hookers", Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, later joined by Tom Hamilton, then Joey Kramer and finally Brad Whitford, chose to call themselves Aerosmith! The year was 1970.
In Boston, they scoured the bars where their popularity was growing. They were spotted by Clive Davies, one of CBS's leading lights, who immediately signed them to a contract.
Their third album, "Toys In The Attic", was released in 1975, and it was a masterstroke! It entered the charts worldwide, selling six million copies! The title track 'Walk This Way' is a huge hit.
Aerosmith's discography is enriched by three new albums, all certified platinum: "Rocks" in 1976, "Draw The Line" in 1977 and "Live Bootleg" in 1978. But at the end of the following year, after the highly successful "Night In The Ruts", Joe decided to jump ship and form the Joe Perry Project, followed by Brad shortly afterwards. The band nevertheless released the album "Rock In A Hard Place" with Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay on guitars, but the two fugitives soon returned to the fold in 1984. The reconciled band released the very average "Done With Mirror" and toured all over America.
In 1985, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry went into rehab. They came back with a vengeance with "Walk This Way", a new version that blended rock and rap, in collaboration with the group Run Dmc. Aerosmith return to the forefront. Two new albums followed: "Permanent Vacation" in 1987 and "Pump" in 1989. In 1993, the band released "Get A Grip", which reached number 1 immediately, selling five million copies thanks to the singles "Living On The Edge", "Crying" and "Amazing".
In March 1997, "Nine Lives" provides the opportunity for a new world tour for the band. Records were broken in terms of takings (over twenty million dollars!). With the exception of "Just Push Play" in 2001 and the blues covers album "Honkin' On A Bobo" in 2004, Aerosmith now only releases compilations and live shows.

The name "Aerosmith" was Kramer's idea after listening to Harry Nilsson's album Aerial Ballet, which featured a cover of a circus performer jumping from a biplane.
