Tarja Turunen, born August 17, 1977 in Kitee, Finland, is a versatile Finnish singer-songwriter known for her soprano voice and significant contributions to the symphonic metal genre.
Tarja's musical journey began at an early age, when she started taking piano lessons. Her classical training laid the foundations for her future projects in the music world. In 1996, she joined the symphonic metal band Nightwish, becoming its founding member and lead singer. Nightwish's innovative blend of metal and orchestral elements, combined with Tarja's operatic voice, catapulted the band to international prominence.
As part of Nightwish, Tarja contributed to the creation of several critically acclaimed albums, including "Oceanborn", "Wishmaster" and "Once". However, in 2005, Tarja and Nightwish parted ways, marking the end of an era for the singer and the band. Despite the split, Tarja continued her career.
Tarja has released numerous solo albums, showcasing her versatility. Her first album, "My Winter Storm" (2007), incorporated a variety of musical styles beyond metal. Subsequent albums, such as "What Lies Beneath" (2010), "Colours in the Dark" (2013) and "In the Raw" (2019), have enabled the artist to flourish and develop her ideas in her preferred style.
Tarja has collaborated with artists of all genres, demonstrating her adaptability and willingness to explore new musical territories. She has sung with artists such as Joe Satriani and Within Temptation, demonstrating her ability to integrate her operatic voice harmoniously into diverse musical landscapes.
