Staind was formed in 1995 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by singer and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki. The band started out as a cover band, performing songs by bands such as Tool and Rage Against the Machine.
In 1999, Staind released their first album on the "Dysfunction" label to moderate success. It was their second album, "Break the Cycle", that catapulted them into the spotlight in 2001 with the hits 'It's Been Awhile' and 'Outside', which received extensive radio airplay and brought the band massive commercial success. "Break the Cycle" reached number one on the Billboard 200.
Staind continued its ascent with "14 Shades of Grey" (2003), featuring the singles 'Price to Play' and 'So Far Away'. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, consolidating their status as one of the world's leading rock bands. In 2005, the band released "Chapter V", featuring a heavier, more aggressive sound than on previous albums. Two tracks, 'Right Here' and 'Falling', reinforced their presence on the rock music scene.
Staind then ventured into different musical territory with their 2008 album, "The Illusion of Progress", which incorporated elements of alternative rock and explored more introspective, personal themes. Despite mixed critical reception, the album nevertheless reached number three on the Billboard 200.
After several years of intensive touring and recording, Staind announced a break in 2012, allowing its members to pursue solo projects and other musical activities. During this period, Aaron Lewis releases country music albums.
In 2019, Staind announced its reformation, began a series of concerts and then released its eighth album, "Confessions Of The Fallen", in 2023, remaining true to its original style.
