The Ocean is a progressive and post-metal band from Berlin, Germany, formed in 2000 by guitarist Robin Staps.
The Ocean released two independent albums, "Fogdiver" (2003) and "Fluxion" (2004), which caught the attention of the underground scene. However, it was with their third album, entitled "Aeolian" (2005), that The Ocean really began to make a name for themselves. The critically acclaimed album saw the band tour Europe and perform at numerous festivals.
In 2007, The Ocean released "Precambrian", a conceptual double album that has been hailed as a major work of progressive metal. The album explores themes such as the formation of the Earth, evolution and the extinction of species.
The band subsequently released several other successful albums, including "Heliocentric" (2010) and "Pelagial" (2013). Over the years, The Ocean has evolved and refined its musical style, moving from a more aggressive, chaotic sound to a more progressive, atmospheric approach. Even more introspective, their latest album, "Holocene", released in 2023, once again demonstrates The Ocean's willingness to evolve.

DID YOU KNOW?
The band's name, The Ocean, was chosen to represent the idea of a massive, unfathomable entity that encompasses all the diversity and complexity of the band's music.
In 2011, The Ocean became the first metal band to perform in Antarctica. They performed an acoustic concert on the frozen continent as part of the promotion of their album "Anthropocentric".
The Ocean set up their own label, called Pelagic Records, in 2009. The label focuses on the promotion and distribution of The Ocean's music, as well as other musical projects related to the band.
The members of The Ocean are also involved in other musical projects. Robin Staps, for example, formed the instrumental group The Mantis.
Ophiacantha oceani, a fragile fossil discovered by paleontologists Lea Numberger and Ben Thuy at the Luxembourg Museum of Natural History, was named after the band to celebrate their paleontologically inspired music.
