Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Caligula's Horse is a progressive metal band whose colourful, emotive music draws on influences as diverse as King Crimson, Steely Dan, Opeth and Jeff Buckley.
Formed in 2011, Caligula's Horse began to make a name for themselves with their eclectic debut album, 'Moments from Ephemeral City' (2011), and its dark, conceptual successor, 'The Tide, the Thief & River's End' (2013). But Caligula's Horse really came into its own with its third album, 'Bloom' (2015), the first on German label Inside Out. It was thanks to this album that the band expanded its touring schedule beyond Australia, notably with the likes of Mastodon, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Tesseract and Anathema. Caligula's Horse's fourth album, 'In Contact' (2017), was the first to break into the Australian charts. Its critical and commercial success allowed the band to significantly expand their reach, selling out venues across Australia, the UK and Europe, and touring the Americas for the first time.
In 2020, Caligula's Horse released one of their most powerful works: 'Rise Radiant', an exploration of the human experience. It's a culmination of the band's artistic development, concentrating the expressive styles that have made Caligula's Horse popular with legions of fans. But it's also much more than that. Rise Radiant is the sound of Caligula's Horse taken to the extreme: at once the fiercest and the most touching, the most expansive and the most condensed, the most poetic and the most violent.
With the release of "Rise Radiant", Caligula's Horse reached its highest positions in the international charts, including 23rd place in the Australian ARIA Albums Chart, 43rd place in the German chart, 5th place in the British Rock Albums chart and 10th place in the American Current Hard Music Albums chart. "Rise Radiant has racked up over 5 million streams on Spotify to date, and has received rave reviews, with Prog Magazine (UK) calling it "Caligula's Horse's best album, a triumph of passion and performance". Produced by band member Sam Vallen and mixed by the esteemed Jens Bogren (Opeth, Devin Townsend Project, Leprous), 'Rise Radiant' features the lead single 'Slow Violence', plus two bonus tracks, Split Enz's 'Message To My Girl' and Peter Gabriel's 'Don't Give Up', with a guest appearance by Lynsey Ward of Exploring Birdsong.
In 2024, Caligula's Horse released their sixth studio album, 'Charcoal Grace', which combines raw rock power with immense emotional depth. "Charcoal Grace was born out of the static despair that the pandemic has imposed on the band and much of the world in recent years. It's an album that takes stock of the experiences and outcomes of that period, and ultimately aims for catharsis - a brighter future.
