British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull, known for her song As Tears Go By, died at the age of 78 in London (United Kingdom), a spokesperson announced on Thursday, January 30.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. She passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her family. She will be greatly missed," said the artist's spokesperson in this statement.

Her hit "As Tears Go By", written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was a Top 10 British song in 1964. Other hits followed: "Come and Stay With Me", "This Little Bird", "Summer Nights". The artist, then Mick Jagger's girlfriend, was drawn into what she would call the Rolling Stones' "permanent circus" and developed a heroin addiction.

This was followed in the 1970s by a suicide attempt, the end of her relationship with the Stones' singer, the loss of custody of her son from a previous relationship, and a descent into hell in the squats and streets of London's Soho. Marianne Faithfull narrowly survived an overdose.

After a punk period, during which she sang biting and disillusioned lyrics like "Why D'Ya Do It?", "Working Class Hero" by John Lennon, "Broken English", a detox cure allowed her to get back on her feet in the 1990s. She can be found in particular on the song and in the video clip of "The Memory Re:mains" by METALLICA in 1997.

She had then returned to music, on stage, on television and in cinema. Marianne Faithfull was also known in France for her role in La Motocyclette alongside Alain Delon, in 1968.
