Yes, miracles exist in music and sometimes business disappears in front of the beauty of a record. Because with "Black Gives Way To Blue", Alice In Chains has made the most beautiful, gripping and poignant comeback in the great history of heavy metal. Overcoming many predictions, the band found a reason to live without its brilliant mentor, Layne Staley. Four years later, the divine Alice gives us back the thrill by releasing a 5th album, "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here". A shiver of fear so much we wait with a frail impatience for the continuation of the adventures of one of the most fascinating bands of the 90s.
But it seems that Staley watches over Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and of course William DuVall who has been able to blend in so well with the band. Because this record is a new little miracle in which we find this dark and desperate heavy metal mixed with acoustic and alternative aspects. The whole thing is carried vocally by Cantrell and DuVall who are once again doing a stunning job with this endearing sadness that characterizes them. And on the program of this very long record of nearly 70 minutes are still some superb musical nuggets.
First of all, let's mention the classic tracks "Hollow", "Pretty Done" and "Stone" which form a perfect trio to open the album and immerse us in the band's universe. Then follow "Voices", "Choke" and "Scalpel" which remind us that with "Sap" that Alice In Chains was brilliant in acoustic rock tinged with sensitivity and feeling. There are also long tracks with very elaborate atmospheres such as the eponymous song or "Phantom Limb" which both take the time to create an atmosphere that looks like a mystical journey with an alternation between heavy passages and calmer moments brought by unstoppable riffs. Finally, more discreet and completely in the style of the band "Low Ceiling" and "Hung On A Hook" stand out as future classics with a perfect voice and heavy guitars, the solo of "Low Ceiling" being a little masterpiece.
"The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" is a new vintage of very high quality. Alice In Chains proves, if necessary, that its return is solid and made to last. With this deep and intelligent album, the Americans prove that they are still one of the best heavy bands of our time, no more, no less. - Official website
