With "Dogs Of War", Saxon had brilliantly raised their game, proving that they still had things to say. In the meantime, Graham Oliver had jumped ship after 18 years of loyal service, and was replaced by Doug Scaratt, with whom Saxon had already worked to produce a live album, "The Eagle Has Landed II", in mid-1996.
Saxon's 13th album, "Unleash The Beast", released in October 1997, was to prove a turning point in the band's history. Released at the height of the true-metal wave, it ushered in a new era for the British legend, amplifying its renaissance. The album is a complete success, abandoning overly classic Hard/Heavy metal in favor of direct, inspired and fast-paced metal.
The album, with its aggressive cover, is packed with excellent songs that will leave listeners stunned to see the venerable Saxon so swift. 'Unleash The Beast', 'Terminal Velocity' and 'Bloodletter', for example, are all highly effective. With strong choruses, powerful, melodic riffs and solos and a huge sound, these tracks are pure Heavy metal nuggets. There are also more peaceful tracks, such as 'The Thin Red Line', an intense, epic gem worthy of a 'Crusader', 'The Preacher', a rather progressive composition full of feeling, and the excellent 'Absent Friends', a poignant ballad in tribute to Byff Byford's lost friend.
Saxon's best album since their heyday in the early '80s, "Unleash The Beast" is a must-have for the band and for heavy metal in general.
