Like an old friend who has never disappointed, there are groups that one is happy to see periodically. Annihilator is one of them. The Canadian band is back with Feast their 14th album and confirms that the duo formed by Jeff Waters with singer David Padden is solid. Feast shows us a band that knows where it's going and always offers an inventive thrash thanks to Waters' technique and Padden's vocal flexibility. There are certainly few surprises on the program when you know the band but the quality is as always there.

Faithful to its habits, Annihilator varies the pleasures all along this "Feast". First of all, it catches us by the throat with incisive thrash tracks with notably a "Deadlock" worthy of a Slayer. In "No Way Out", "Demon Code" and "Smear Campaign", Waters throws ultra catchy riffs and solos of which he has the secret, letting us savour his very "Guitar-Hero" technique.

But there are some surprises. Thus "No Surrender" is an explosive mix of thrash and groove, as if Machine Head had met Jamiroquai for a remarkable result. Padden excels in all styles and goes from a jazzy to a thrash air with ease. There's also the ballad "Perfect Angel Eyes", a bit commercial but full of feeling, "Fight The World" which traps us by mixing melody and thrash in a strong song worthy of the great era and finally "One Falls, Two Rise", the hit of the album, which starts on a rock close to Stonesour and then goes from thrash to groove by mixing some hardcore influences.

Confirming the chameleon side of the band, "Feast" shows once again that Jeff Waters is not only an excellent composer but also a very good musician. As long as the purists won't be scared by his 'jack of all trades' side, the band is now ready to storm the top of the Thrash scene.

ROCK - If "Secret Messages" had left a bitter taste to the band's fans, "Balance Of Power" comes to deal them the final blow.

HEAVY METAL - Knowing how to surround himself with people and grasping fashions and trends, Ozzy managed a nice trick with this opportunistic and intelligent album, a bit underestimated.
