In the galaxy of progressive groups with inaccessible tendencies, Anekdoten occupies a leading position, like the King Crimsons who clearly constitute their main influence. With From Within, we're not disappointed: it's still as inaccessible as ever and it will take a certain number of listenings and a good dose of self-control to get through this opus. And yet, it is worth the effort to force yourself a little.

As we are used to with this Swedish group, it is certainly production that is the biggest weak point. After 3 albums, it must be admitted that this is not a mistake but a deliberate choice to stand out by a particular sound. The problem is that I would describe this sound as particularly... unpleasant. It is deaf, much too deaf, some will even say that it is rather dirty, much too dirty.

From Within's interest lies clearly in the compositions and the atmosphere that emerges from this album. The thundering start of the first track immediately puts you in the mood: it is extremely tormented, dark, melancholic, disturbing, both harmonically, rhythmically and in terms of interpretation. Although the compositions are coherent, some chord overlays will make you uncomfortable, especially since the rhythm section will amplify this discomfort with a frequent, discreet interpretation that is out of step with the melody.

Finally, the great strength lies essentially in the interpretation: the voice, the guitarist's touch on both his arpeggios and riffs, the controlled aggressiveness of the bass contribute to accentuate the dark side of the whole. By adding always a mellotron, songs like 'Hole' or 'Kiss Of Life' will take your guts and disturb you, but you will feel obliged to go all the way, a little like a movie can stress you without you being able to get away from it.

Without being a masterpiece, far from it, From Within remains an album that will delight you if you have already been sensitive to the two previous opuses. If, on the other hand, you simply want to discover Anekdoten, turn to their first album or Gravity, of a higher level in every point.
