Despite the decline in popularity of melodic speed metal in recent years, Chris Bay continues to steer the Freedom Call ship steadily. This eighth album, "Beyond", follows a compilation album, "Ages Of Light", which reviewed the band's career. In the meantime, the rhythm section of the band has changed with Ilker Ersin back on bass after 9 years of absence and the arrival of Ramy Ali as drummer.
In "Beyond" the band has left aside the previous attempts. They offer us an opus in the line of their first records delivering a soft, positive and joyful speed metal which has made their reputation. This return to the pure and hard heroïc fantasy should make the happiness of the old fans thanks to some small nuggets. Freedom call presents a vigor that we thought was lost by offering unforgettable refrains, heady melodies like 'Union Of The Strong', 'Come On Home' or 'Journey Into Wonderland'. All the ingredients that have made the success of the band are present, from the choirs to the calmer breaks and especially this typical catchy side. Besides these classic tracks, Freedom Call graces us with 'Beyond' an epic and progressive track of a beautiful efficiency and with 'Dance Off The Devil' an unexpected song tinged with world music, a real mix of good feelings that lightens up the album.
Even if we can regret that the band left aside the darker passages and the attempts of change, it finds with "Beyond" a second youth by proposing a simple and catchy melodic speed metal. Freedom Call has rediscovered its roots and this is very pleasant at a time when the genre is out of inspiration. - Official website
