The Americans of Spock's Beard sign with "Day For Night" their fourth album. Is it because of their signature on Inside Out that Neal Morse's band delivers their least progressive and most pop production? Still, this impression is reinforced by the format of the tracks which, with rare exceptions, are very short, which its detractors will not fail to reproach exaggeratedly...

Exaggerated because this "Day For Night" has nothing unpleasant, quite the contrary. The eponymous opening offers us a bewitching melody and a sumptuous acoustic break... The vocal harmonies are numerous in particular on 'Gibberish' whose chorus  remains engraved in the memory! Don't believe that Spock's Beard stops in such a good way... The very rocking 'Skin' follows, just as exhilarating as its predecessors, then 'The Distance To The Sun', a moving acoustic track with sublime refrains.

But to confine this "Day For Night" to a succession of 15 heady rock tracks or even mawkish pop ('Can't Get It Wrong') would be to summarize it in a much too simplistic way, as can be proved by the convoluted tracks that progressive rock fans love and demand... Let's mention the fabulous 'Crack The Big Sky' with its rhythmic rock and its Beatles-like accents and its very inspired breaks filled with brass instruments... In the same vein, we'll find the superb 'The Gypsy' and its instrumental part dominated by stunning keyboard harmonies... Finally, we'll also mention the cheerful instrumental 'The Healing Colors Of Sound - Part 1' close to A. C.T..... After a rhythmic and exciting first part, we can only reproach the whole to be a little breathless on the length (more than 78 minutes).

Unfortunately, for having dared to make an incursion on the commercial side of the music, Spock's Beard will attract the wrath of a part of the hardcore progressive fans. However, even if "Day For Night" moves away from the stereotypes of the genre, it remains a fresh opus with unstoppable hits and certainly an excellent album to discover the musical universe of the Americans.
