Although formed in 2005 and already author of two albums, it's only with the release of their third offering that we get to know Soup, a Norwegian quartet led by the keyboardist and singer Erlend Viken. And without immediately revealing the whole content of this review, we have to admit that it was high time to discover this band with undeniable qualities.
During the 48 minutes of The Beauty of Our Youth, Soup takes us in a simply magical universe, carrying intense emotions, the kind that every music lover tries to extract from his deepest self. The eight tracks of this little nugget marvelously marry the preciousness and the delicacy of a music box, to the contained violence of saturated guitars choruses. The first listening of The Spirit Lodge will immediately bring the listener to a more than obvious analogy with the last works of Anathema. But where Cavanagh's band indulges in a certain form of darkness, our Scandinavians prefer a joyfulness (quite relative) which can be found in some particularly "catchy" choruses and refrains (Transient Days for example), which can evoke sometimes Muse.
And as if all this was not enough, Soup completes its magnificent melodies with ultra-clean arrangements, full of romantic symphonism, and this more particularly in the instrumental developments which judiciously lengthen the majority of the titles, and in particular Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, giving all its sense to the progressive term, without this one becoming synonymous of complexity. Add to that a perfect control of the sound volume changes, and the universe depicted by the band becomes a space in which the mind wanders and abandons itself, to let only the raw emotions invade the cortex of the listener.
At the moment of concluding this review, I remember all the moments of happiness felt while listening to this magic album and I encourage all the readers to rush to this amazing album, they won't be disappointed. - Official website

Pour ceux qui aime, je conseil vraiment les trois autres albums de Soup. Deux sont en Anglais avec des chansons vraiment variées, et une perle « northern patriarch » dont il existe une vidéo. La voix est toujours aussi belle. Duun le troisième album du groupe est en Norvégien. La musique est un peu plus « folklorique » mais l’ambiance est la même, et pour ceux qui comprennent le Norvégien, les textes sont vraiment intéressants rappelant que la Norvège était un petit pays de pêcheurs et d’agriculteur il n’y a pas si longtemps. Dernier point à ajouter, Soup est vraiment un bon groupe Live. Ils n’ont pas de jeux de scène très développé, le chanteur est aussi aux claviers, mais leur musique est vraiment intense… Ils ont eu un franc succès en faisant la première partie de Opeth (Black Metal) a Trondheim.

Je suis en total accord avec la chronique de mon confrère. Ce disque est une découverte extra-ordinaire. Le chant est tout simplement merveilleux et surtout porté par une atmosphère joyeuse et pleine d'émotion. Le travail sur les choeurs apporte ce petit plus qui vous fera frissonner de bonheur.
Il y a fort à parier que cet album fera parti du top 5 à la fin de l'année 2014 ... Comme quoi il ne faut pas se fier à l'étiquette, on peut s'appeler Soup et ne pas en être.

Lors de l'écriture de cette chronique, j'ai eu un court instant de doute quant au caractère dithyrambique de celle-ci. Visiblement, j'ai eu tord de m'inquiéter puisque tu partages avec moi l'émerveillement lié à cette galette.

Superbe chronique qui m'a donné envie d'écouter le morceau. Et là, j'ai pris une baffe magistrale. C'est magnifique. Le morceau, dans sa progression, m'a fait penser au "Untouchable part 1" d'ANATHEMA. Et quelle intensité ! Et quel chanteur !
