Arena is a bit like those good wines that improve with age: if I would personally describe the beginning of their career as a bit bland, it is clear that the years passing the level certainly increases. Band's first album with their new singer Rob Sowden, Immortal clearly confirms the qualities we already felt with The Visitor and The Cry.
First of all, at the level of production: finally, production is at the service of compositions, in other words, it highlights the atmosphere that the whole group wishes to express. Thus, the strength of the intros of Chosen or Moviedrome is multiplied tenfold and these tracks catch your attention from the very first seconds.
On the composition side, the trio Nolan, Pointer, Mitchell works perfectly, each bringing their own melodic or rhythmic strength. What could sometimes seem like simple relatively pop songs is enhanced by the original side of an offbeat rhythmic as Mick Pointer knows how to serve them so well, like 'Climbing The Net', which could have fallen flat without the few rhythmic and harmonic finds it contains.
Finally, it is impossible to ignore the epic track of this album: Moviedrome. Like Genesis and his Supper's Ready, Arena also composed its masterpiece. It's hard to start this song without going all the way and the surprise is immense when you realize that 20 minutes have passed without you being able to divert your attention from this monument of neo-progressive rock.
