Contrary to popular belief, The Lens is far from being a new band. In fact, this project lived from 1976 to 1981, and is made up of two musicians, Martin Orford and Michael Holmes, who are well known to the neo-progressive movement, since they went on to found the group IQ. The tracks on this album date back to the youth of the two protagonists and have been brought up to date.
"A Word In Your Eyes" is undeniably reminiscent of any of IQ's CDs, except that this album is almost entirely instrumental, despite a few scattered vocals. Progressive in style, with many changes of rhythm and phrasing, the music on The Lens is an exchange between synths and electric or acoustic guitars, mediated by IQ's characteristic bass. This famous bass, full of life, gives more rhythm to the music than the drums themselves.
The neo side is of course very present, with convoluted, nostalgic melodies reminiscent of Tim Story's stripped-down style. Light sound effects - such as birdsong or wind noise - add an extra touch to these emotionally-charged compositions.
The Lens shows just how inspired the two musicians were before they founded IQ. The absence of vocals is not overly noticeable, and the different inspirations that emerge from the various tracks avoid weariness. A must-have album for neo-progressive fans. A must-have if you're an IQ fan. - Official website
