Here is a band that left us a very nice impression on the occasion of their album "The Detached" but that we had lost sight of a little. Between this new album and "The Detached" the band kept the defined course with "Andromeda Unchained" despite the troubles related to Jacob Hansen's departure to sing and the arrival of a new guitarist. "Horizons" is the sixth album of the Danes at the same time as the celebration of their first decade of activity.
Anubis Gate is a group that cultivates an unstable position in the global metal scene between melodic and progressive obedience. The compositions are once again of great harmonic richness and breathtaking vocal density, but the progressive complexity is often minimal. A balancing exercise that proves its worth in "Horizons" with new and very heady melodies (notably "Destined To Remember" or "Airways") and instrumental passages (let's mention the end of "Mindlessness") concise and structured.
Some will be pleased with the lightened technical and instrumental sequences that do not weigh excessively on an already well-stocked and powerful disc. The most reasonable critics will point out the slight hollows of the album ('Horizons' and 'Erasure'), the electro fragments that mechanize an already very regulated music or the lack of risk taking. Yet 'A Dream Within A Dream' showed what is most akin to boldness with the band's longest track and its willingness to use one of the most common gimmicks of progressive metal by covering themes developed in other tracks on the album. But the construction is awkward, the dive into the piece too fast and the different parts assembled without much fluidity.
With this new album, the Danes will consolidate their place in the heart of refractories of a progressive metal that is too technical.. Most of the compositions of "Horizons" are excellent (up to "Mindlessness") and the score is largely mastered but nothing really contrasts with the quality of the latest albums. Is the essay 'A Dream Within A Dream' an indication of what Anubis Gate's future will be like? Still too timid to fully convince, the group's attempt is nevertheless to be welcomed and encouraged. - Official website
