ROBERT PLANT: Lullaby And...the Ceaseless Roar (ROCK): review / opinion to read on Music Waves

No rest for Robert Plant, who, to Jimmy Page's great displeasure, continues to tread the international stages to propose his compositions, including a few covers of Led Zeppelin. During his last concerts, new titles appeared: here they are now on this new opus entitled "Lullaby And... The Ceaseless Roar". The album, composed in close collaboration with the members of the Sensational Space Shifters, offers us mixed tracks, mixing oriental and african influences and references to the english rock scene.

The cover of a blues classic, 'Little Maggie' sets the tone with the banjo of Skin Tyson, guitarist of the English band Cast, accompanied by the tribal rhythm of Dave Smith on loops by John Baggot, known for his participation with Massive Attack and Portishead. The ensemble sounds bluegrass (a musical style of American origin that constitutes a branch of country music) while the ritti of Juldeh Camara, the Gambian griot, takes us to African lands while Plant's voice is quiet and calm. We find this country-folk mix on 'Poor Howard', 'Up On The Hollow Hill (Understanding Arthur)' and on 'Arbaden (Maggie's Baby)'.

The end of his love story with Patty Griffin, allows him to express his emotions on 'A Stolen Kiss', 'House Of Love' or 'Somebody There', slower tracks where Plant's voice becomes more languorous. The single 'Rainbow' remains the most accessible and Rocky track of the album, while the blues is present on 'Turn t Up', a haunting melody reminiscent of Tom Waits. The Celtic reference is found on 'Embrace Another Fall' with the aerial voice of Julie Murphy. We can't talk about this album without mentioning Beck bassist Billy Fuller and guitarist Justin Adams, a character who has collaborated with Brian Eno, Sinead O'Connor and worked with the Tuareg blues band Tinariwen, who brought the oriental sound that Robert Plant loves.

Always attentive to other cultures, Robert Plant continues his path and shows us once again the extent of his talent. 'Lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar' is a collaborative album where each musician brings his own influences and musical culture.
