Emerging from a difficult period, Jon Schaffer made up for lost time and released the fourth Iced Earth album in the summer of 1996. Matthew Barlow still accompanies him, and for this new opus, "The Dark Saga", Schaffer proposes a concept album based on the comic-book character Spawn, written by Tood Mc Farlane, the latter having agreed to draw the cover.

'The Dark Saga', 'Violate', 'Vengeance Is Mine' and 'The Hunter' are power metal nuggets that show the band at the top of their game. On these tracks, Schaffer delivers the ultra-heavy riffs and solos he's always known for, while Barlow's vocals are impeccable, particularly on the choruses, which are easy to remember. But within this fury lie some superb breaks. 'I Died For You' is a superb ballad with an intense chorus, confirming the band's evolution towards a more melodic direction.

Finally, the album ends in style with the trilogy 'The Suffering', divided into three parts for over 17 minutes of music. This song perfectly sums up all Iced Earth's qualities and strengths. Between power, epic and lyrical aspects and dark melodies, the song plunges the listener into the heart of the story, the title track 'Question Of Heaven' being an apotheosis and an immense heavy metal track.

This is Iced Earth's most accessible album since their debut, moving between heavy and power metal, with a strong emphasis on melodies and vocals. The result is an excellent record, with a number of bravura tracks bearing the Iced Earth hallmark and a subtle balance between calm and dynamism.
