What could be more predictable, when you're a band as atypical as Freak Kitchen, than to suffer an artistic failure with an album that's too disconcerting? This is what happened to the Swedish trio with their previous eponymous opus, which we ourselves accused in our pages of being too pop. Far be it from us, however, to be too quick to condemn such a seductive and engaging combo. So it's with great pleasure that we welcome their return with a new release entitled "Dead Soul Man".

While Mattias and his band return to the formula that has made them so successful up to now, the title of this album conveys a darker atmosphere than usual. You only have to read the tracklist to get a glimpse: 'Ungly Side Of Me', 'The Sinking Planet', 'Dead Soul Man'... It's clear that we're not swimming in the beautiful land of blue dreams! This impression is confirmed by tracks such as the aggressive "Silence!" and the ominous "Black Spider Flag". But rest assured, Freak Kitchen haven't become a depressive doom band either (pleonasm?).

Indeed, "Dead Soul Man" remains a return to business as usual, bringing back everything that makes this band so unique and exciting, with a recipe based on astonishing, even arrhythmic riffs ("The Sinking Planet" and its jazzy break), irresistible grooves ("Supermodel Baby"), mind-blowing solos, delirious instrumental breaks ("Gun God") and offbeat lyrics. "Dead Soul Men" also contains its share of surprises, with a heavy, tribal "Get A Life", or its eponymous track with gospel accents on its finale. Finally, although he appears to be the master on board, Mattias nonetheless relinquishes the role of vocalist to his mates on a neo-punk "I Refuse" for Christian Gronlund, and a catchy "Slap Me In The Face" for Joakim Sjoberg, which unfortunately goes a little round.

Despite a finale that loses a little of its intensity, "Dead Soul Man" is still reassuring about Freak Kitchen's state of health. The trio is once again inventive and wacky, assuming its personality and originality and continuing to integrate new elements. And if there are a few pop elements reminiscent of the previous opus ("Everything Is Under Control"), these blend perfectly into the original mixture offered by our Nordic cooks.

OTHER REVIEWS
FREAK KITCHEN: Spanking Hour (1996)
ROCK - Powerful, surprising, catchy and endearing at the same time, Freak Kitchen touches the most varied fans and imposes itself as soon as "Spanking Hour" as a separate and unavoidable band.
THE FLOWER KINGS: Flower Power (1999)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - With "Flower Power", the "Flower Kings" leave the listener stunned. The richness it contains makes it a full-fledged album, hardly accessible.
