Where are we with "And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead"? If "Tao Of The Dead", released in 2011, can be considered as their most progressive album (at least in its structure), the following opus "Lost Songs" (2012) saw the band coming back to more concise compositions. This new album, soberly entitled "IX" (I'll let you guess why), seems to synthesize the early indie-rock and progressive rock that the band has been defending since "World's Apart" (2006).
Those who know Trail Of Dead won't be surprised. The band still masters as well as ever this clever mix of strong riffs ('A Million Random Digits' with its martial drums) and symphonic rock ('How To Avoid Huge Ships' and its superb increasing power). A formula that has few equivalents, except maybe The Smashing Pumpkins from the 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness' period.
The sequences between the tracks are subtle and give an impression of homogeneity while alternating angry parts and calmer moments, during the whole duration of this opus. The bravura moments are legion, notably on 'Lie Without A Liar' which could make a superb single or on 'Lost In The Grand Scheme' whose vocals will probably remind you of the U2 of the great days. They are, moreover, varied enough (the unexpected Celtic music in 'Sound Of The Silk') to never tire the listener, as long as he doesn't resist to the "alternative rock" sound that remains the DNA of Trail Of Dead.
A last word about the artwork that we once again owe to Conrad Keely (one of the founding members of the band), a colourful mix that should please manga and heroic fantasy lovers and which is part of the band's recurrent visual identity. Finally, if you opt for the digipack CD edition, you will be entitled to 2 nice (and relatively anecdotal) instrumental bonus tracks but above all to an extra EP containing an excellent 19 minutes epic track "Tao Of The Dead part III" which would not be out of place in any good progressive rock discotheque. Time will tell if this is a major album in Trail Of Dead's discography, but it can already make a good figure in the "top" at the end of the year 2014. - Official website
