Lalu is the solo project of Vivien Lalu, a French keyboardist who has already proven himself on a few albums of the Lion Music label, notably in the works of Hubi Meisel or Joop Wolters. The latter is also the guitarist on this "Oniric Metal", accompanied by singer Martin Lemar (Tomorrow's Eve), bassist Russell Bergquist and drummer Ryan Van Poederooyen (Devin Townsend)

The working method won't confuse the regulars, but it still deserves to be presented. Indeed, as the protagonists all come from different countries, each of them recorded their part in a national studio and the mix was then done by Lalu.

Contrary to what one might expect, 'Oniric Metal' is definitely not a keyboardist's album as Jordan Rudess or Derek Sherinian might have done. It's a very balanced work that avoids almost all the pitfalls of the genre: progressive and technical tracks that don't fall into demonstration, calmer tracks free of any mawkishness and catchy tracks that you won't get tired of after five or six listenings.

Whatever the exercise, Lalu do it well. But if the compositions are effective, some credit must also be given to the musicians who support him. Wolters' touch is often bluffing of accuracy just like Lemar's vocals, captivating as well in its nervousness as in its softness.

Sensitivity and power are the key words of this "Oniric Metal". There's really not much to reproach Lalu who offers us a first album of an impressive maturity and which should find its public without any problem.

MELODIC HARD ROCK - For his first record, Starbreaker offered us a little nugget of melodic hard rock to classify between TNT and Pink Cream 69.
