While some unlucky ones take years to break through, others, on the contrary, waste no time in imposing themselves. Kadavar is one of them. Despite the undeniable qualities of the combo, it is nevertheless permissible to wonder whether this lightning success is justified.
Certainly the first eponymous album was good, even excellent, certainly the concerts delivered by the trio were just as good, but no more so than others... But the Germans have something extra, a kind of magic that, coupled with a jubilant energy, a sense of wet (hard) rock feeling and an unstoppable writing, leads to an orgasmic Grail.
Although simple in appearance, their art sounds like an obvious one, that of listening to a noble and pure music that borders on a form of the Absolute. By small pointillist touches, Kadavar continues its mutation, less doom and simply more rock and bluesy ('Filthy illusion', 'Pale Blue Eyes'). The writing has tightened up and feels less like a water pipe, diluting the psychedelic touches that are always present ('Spanish Wild Rose'), into a more direct base, even though catchy melodies have always been one of the trademarks of the trio led by singer and guitarist Lupus, more inspired than ever here, letting his guitar pour out a torrential feeling, a launching pad for Dantesque solos live.
First opus with the new bassist, Dragon, "Berlin" accumulates hits without ever softening, always going to the essential (everything is packed in four minutes), sometimes fast like 'Lord Of The Sky' or 'Into The Night', but most of the time quietly ('Last Living Dinosaur') and always jubilant. Compact and homogeneous, the work remains nevertheless nuanced in its heavy intensity. Immediate hymns, demented anvils such as 'Stolen Dreams', 'The Old Man' or 'Thousand Miles Away Frome Home' give shivers of fear through their downy hardness.
More than the worthy successor to the eponymous record, this third effort shows that Kadavar is not just the sensation of the moment but a great band that is destined to last. - Official website
