Riverside returns two years after a "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves" which had somewhat disappointed a certain public, so much the Poles had set the bar high with their previous albums. In the meantime, leader Mariusz Duda has released the fourth album of his solo project, Lunatic Soul, but also a tribute to Alec Widley, a young progressive music fan, artist and poet who died too soon from cancer, entitled 'The Old Peace', the result of a first collaboration with Steven Wilson.
This sixth album, presented as more mature and rooted in the 70's and 80's by the band itself, talks about transformation and the important decisions one makes in one's life. To make it all come true, the Poles play a music that seems rather calm on the surface. The production and the construction of the pieces are of a great delicacy. The relatively soft sound of the saturated guitars doesn't allow to clearly distinguish the rises in power or anger. Duda's vocals are remarkably smooth with this little touch of emotion while being discreet and restrained. The bass is often snoring or delicate but in any case always masterful and fluid. Its use is often original and always at the service of a musicality that belongs only to this band.
Riverside's music has become much calmer at the expense of the sometimes rougher flights of fancy that dotted the early albums but you only have to listen to the very melodic '#Addicted', the contained saturation of 'Saturate Me', the delicate beauty of 'Afloat' to be sure that it is the same Riverside we loved on "Second Life Syndrome". Each title has a development of great finesse with many embellishments that one can perceive behind an apparent nonchalance. Listening to 'Discard Your Fear' will help to break down the last reluctance as this track is representative of what Riverside is. Even the seemingly simplest ballads like 'Time Travellers' have that little bit of soul that makes you capsize.
It was clear that Riverside had started a much more relaxed turn with the previous album that is confirmed with this "Love, Fear And Time Machine". The production and the sound have a lot to do with it, because despite what a first quick listen can suggest, the music does not lack of drive and relief. It's a natural evolution for a subtle, intelligent and endearing band. It would therefore be a pity to miss this very beautiful album. - Official website
