"Chase The Dragon", 3rd album of the British band Magnum, is for many the opus with which the general public discovered Bob Catley's band. This time, the cover finally catches the eye. Its creator is Rodney Matthews and this is his first collaboration with the English combo. Then, there is the arrival of Mark Stanway, the faithful keyboardist, in the band. And finaly, the band find a heavy sound to which the men from Birmingham hadn't accustomed us until then.
Composed two years earlier, "Chase The Dragon" entered the Top 20 of the British charts. The group refined its style, it entered adulthood and erased its past mistakes which sometimes led it to stray to get closer to Styx and Queen. The idea was honourable but the band wasn't necessarily on the path where it should be. Melodic melodic hard rock, more muscular and emphatic, seemed to be the area of choice where it would reveal itself.
And that's what we're talking about here. Tony Clarkin's compositions are inspired, rich, grandiloquent, epic, varied, powerful, and moving, they have left their mark. 'Sacred Hour', 'The Spirit' and 'We All Play The Game' did not become institutions by accident. The band is also well aware of this, as many of the tracks from 'Chase The Dragon' are still played live today. The credit for this success also goes to Mark Stanway. His subtle, judicious and therefore striking keyboard work is for a lot in the quality of this production. As for the sound, it's quite direct and this is the hardest, even heavy opus - listen to 'Soldier On The Line' of the band.
"Chase The Dragon" remains Magnum's best-selling album to this day. It is a must-have in their discography alongside "On A Storyteller's Night". Don't miss it! - Official website
