"With this first eponymous opus, Cruzh joins the Scandinavian tradition of a nostalgic AOR of the 80's, both pleasant and singularly lacking of personality."

A typical example of many northern bands regularly taking the listener on time travels, Swedish trio Cruzh, which formed in 2013, had already produced two EPs before being spotted by Frontiers on which they signed to offer a first album.
Direction the 80's, with Bon Jovi, Def Leppard or Danger Danger in focus, bands that seem to have inspired the members of Cruzh: The introductive 'In N'Out Of Love' sees its riff coming from the one of 'Livin' On A Prayer' (taken from Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet"), the shadow of Danger Danger hovers on a 'Hard To Get' with a light and catchy chorus while the one of the Leopards of Sheffield is particularly present on 'First Cruzh' or the catchy 'Survive' with typical choirs of Joe Elliott's gang. The two last influences merge on 'You', the most nuanced track of the opus with a nice rise in intensity.
But although the listening of the deliciously retro and perfectly interpreted eleven tracks of "Cruzh" brings an indisputable pleasure, there is not either what to trigger an uncontrollable enthusiasm. First of all, it is due to a flagrant lack of personality, which is a pity because 'Set Me Free', which sees the trio going on a more Scandinavian way, proves that the Swedes can extract themselves from the nostalgia of the 80's which is the main trademark of this opus. To note also the ballad 'Straight From The Heart' spreading on more than seven minutes and linking a first acoustic part and a second electric one, which shows there too that Cruzh can show some originality. Finally, although it can be situated between those of Ted Poley (Danger Danger) and Joe Elliott (Def Leppard), the voice of Tony Andersson clearly shows limits that these two stars don't have, which could handicap the band when it comes to go to a higher level.
Apart from these few points, "Cruzh" remains a pleasant opus, especially for all those who were marked by the melodic rock of the 80s. It remains to be seen if the lessons will be learnt in order to allow the Swedes to stand out from the mass of Scandinavian bands working in this niche, whose pervasive nostalgia can bewitch as well as repel.
