"One Of These Nights" is the fourth album of the Eagles, who have moved away from the country folk of their origins to forge a more soft rock identity, a vector of success and notoriety. It's the second album with Don Felder and the last with Bernie Leadon who certainly doesn't recognize himself in the new formula.

Although the roots are never far away, the album starts with a pop rock song with Don Henley on vocals. Meisner's heavy bass work on this track brings a slightly groovy tone to this very rhythmic track. The southern steppes vibe returns on 'Too Many Hands' with Randy Meisner's high-pitched vocals that, with harmony backing vocals, evoke the Bee Gees.

Among the standout tracks is 'Journey Of A Sorcerer' written and played by Bernie Leadon as a final offering to a band he helped create. It is an instrumental with a beautiful, emphatic, orchestrated chorus and rather restrained verses with an omnipresent banjo. 'Lyin' Eyes', the second single from the album, is faultless and was awarded the best pop performance of 1975. 'Take It To The Limit' is a richly arranged ballad but a little too mannered to stand the test of time.

"One Of These Nights' digs the furrow that will lead to the band's ultimate album 'Hotel California'. The more Rock coloration gives major assets to the Eagles, who manage to give their place to each musician even if Don Henley remains the most present artisan. An album that lacks a bit of coherence but gathers superb timeless tracks.
