It took patience to savour Hyperdump's second album. Since 2013, the band has been keeping a low profile. This year, they're back with Send The Wood after having changed drummer and incorporated a keyboard. With "The Weak Man", Hyperdump offers a concept album set in a purgatory city, Dumptown, in which a man will foment a revolution to avenge his brother.
'Awaken' and 'History' take us into a city that is more an asylum than anything else. The musical universe reminds us of Mike Patton but also of Devin Townsend, all with keyboards worthy of the madness of a Shining. The WS vocals are impressive, in clear vocals as well as in growl. Little by little you get into the concept and the impression of reading a book is palpable. The furious madness then fades away. The band delivers several brilliant titles full of melodies and brings an epic dimension reinforced by the presence of excellent guests.
The result is captivating. 'Weak Man' is the first highlight, close to Faith No More, a powerful hit with an unstoppable melody. The growl of 'Departure' and the opening speech of 'No One Can Divide Us' sound the beginning of the revolt. 'Forlornly' with Mark Basile from DGM flirts with the progressive and sends us back to Superior or Queensrÿche. With 'Incoherence' and 'Massacre', madness comes back to the foreground for a brilliant and gripping result, worthy of the best of Devin Townsend, leading us to a grandiose finale, 'No More', which is a remarkable epic track on which Blaze Bayley brings his emotional strength. With 'Revelation' and 'Circling Down The Drain', Hyperdump concludes its story with a perfect mix of intense melody and the crossover facet that suits it so well.
"The Weak Man" is a brilliant concept album. Hyperdump deploys great musical inventiveness in the service of a compelling story. In doing so, he takes a big step forward and launches himself with talent in the footsteps of his glorious role models. - Official website
