For a few years now, Wednesday 13 has hardened the tone on his albums, giving them a darker and deeper side, both from a strictly musical point of view and in terms of lyrics. Travis Smith's cover will not fool anyone, a perfect illustration of the environment in which the formation is immersed. But the last opuses do not shine by their originality and give the feeling that the band is starting to go round in circles.

Once the useless introduction of "Last Rites" is over, the listener is immersed in the horrific and familiar universe of Americans with "What The Night Brings", an opening that will not disorientate anyone but remains no less successful, especially since "Cadaverous" - with its Rammstein-style pachydermic riff - and especially the potential hit "Blood Sick" confirm the good form of this debut album. Joseph Poole's voice is great, perfectly reflecting the tortured atmosphere of this new manifesto.

Unfortunately, the rest will be less exciting, the group alternating hot and cold... "Good Riddance", "Omen Amen", "Cruel To You", "Prey For Me", are all interchangeable titles that bring a linearity that is clearly detrimental to the whole. However, a few nuggets appear, such as the thrash "You Breath I Kill", or the long and heavy "Condolences" with the appearance of a roller coaster, which gives strength and a little contrast to a disc that was beginning to become too monotonous.

If Wednesday 13's 2017 vintage is far from bad, the band should consider renewing its formula for the future, because "Condolences" looks furiously like "another" album: not unpleasant, well executed, but too lacking ambition to remain in the memories.

OTHER REVIEWS
MAGENTA: We Are Legend (2017)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Without revolutionizing the band's style while bringing some slight evolutions, "We Are Legend" is part of the continuity of the previous opus.
SOUP: Remedies (2017)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - As usual, Soup delivers a sumptuous album at the crossroads of progressive, atmospheric and post rock. Magical.
