Thirty years ago Harem Scarem was born, and to celebrate this special anniversary the Canadians are offering us this year their 16th album. The six-year break between "Hope" and "Thirteen" ("Mood Things II" being a filling) is already far away and this opus, released three years ago, was finally a new impulse to the band.
Over the years and albums, Harem Scarem has finally found a sound and he now attaches himself to it with serenity. The approach might seem comfortable, some might say, but why change a formula that works?
Listening to the opus one can only be reassured about the shape of the Canadians. Their racy and enthusiastic AOR is always on the program. And the characteristics of this one always at the rendezvous. In the end, all you need to do is to find the riffs, the upbeat solos - thank you Master Lesperance - and the thunderous melodies, magnified by the hoarse voice of Mr. Hess, to give happiness to the aficionados. In this musical vein, the main thing is not to repeat, and frankly, the challenge must be quite delicate. The Canadians are doing very well, none of the tracks are like the previous one.
So of course, some tracks stand out and it is easier to be excited by the bombshells that are 'United', 'Sinking Ship', 'No Regrets', 'Indestructible' and 'Things I Know', but the rest reaches a level that, for comparison, Gotthard was unable to offer in his last opus and that Honeymoon Suite, other Canadians who worked in the same register, have only rarely met. Jeff Scott Sotto, by the way, sings on 'Bite The Bullet' and 'Here Today, Gone Tomorrow', and Queen's shadow hovers on 'Gravity' and 'The Sky Is Falling'.
In a style more muffled than the Scandinavian bands offers these days, Harem Scarem remains in the lead band. The elders don't give up and celebrate with dignity their thirtieth anniversary with this most melodic "United". The hard melodic Beatles have struck again! - Official website
