"Plagues Of Babylon" seemed to be a kind of return to inspiration for Jon Schaffer's band after several half-hearted albums. A change of guitarist later, Jake Dreyer succeeding Troy Seele, Iced Earth comes back with an "Incorruptible" who has the heavy task of confirming the good trajectory started a few years ago.
With a very clean production and a more combative sound, the album opens with a 'Great Heathen Army' which after a good minute of introduction in a Gregorian atmosphere resounds like a masterful slap reminiscent of Iced Earth's best moments. Jon Schaffer's characteristic rhythmics, a powerful and aggressive vocal and a superb solo come out in a fully recovered spirit. 'Black Flag' is heavier and has an amazing chorus. The first single 'Seven Headed Whore' goes into high gear by alternating the granular vocals typical of Stu Block with higher vocals with a black metal tendency.
"Incorruptible' also offers more progressive tracks in its construction such as 'Raven Wing' and 'The Veil'. These tracks are strongly in the melodic tradition of 'The Dark Saga' or 'Something This Way Comes'. The album ends with 'Clear The Way (December 13th, 1862)' which starts out very slowly and introduces both a Celtic atmosphere and a varied universe. With its wonderfull chorus, this track gathers all that we like in Iced Earth who knows how to combine with pleasure melody and vigour. A nugget that refers to the Irish soldiers of the battle of Fredericksburg during the American Civil War.
All the ingredients for success are gathered in this new work proposed by Jon Schaffer and his band. We find the verve and enthusiasm of the band's golden age with a Stu Block at the top of his vocal art, a highly inspired guitar soloist and compositions that border on perfection. - Official website
