For several years, the American musician Mark Lanegan, who went through Screaming Trees or Queens Of The Stone Age, has been producing remarkable concept albums under his name. This year, he has chosen to focus on the gargoyles that adorn our cathedrals.
Mark Lanegan immediately plunges us into a dark universe, inherited from comics and the cyberpunk philosophy that delighted Gary Numan or Billy Idol. The disturbing atmospheres of 'Emperor' with its sharp guitars,'Death's Head Tatoo' and its robotic rhythms or 'Nocturne' highlight the warm and bewitching voice of its performer, who seems to emerge from cursed places. The less tormented 'Blue Blue Sea' is bathed in madness with its church organ and technoid rhythm.
Despite this, the album is never overwhelming: the melodies and choruses are catchy. In addition, some pieces differ fundamentally from the above-mentioned tracks. They become more melancholic, more intimate, like the ritornello of "Sister", repetitive and lascivious, evoking "Venus in Furs" by Velvet Underground, with a saxophone to warm our entrails. "Goodbye To Beauty" with its resigned words reveals all the talents of crooner of its interpreter close to Chris Rea.
In the end, Mark Lanegan opposes rather dark and cyberpunk tracks to brighter ones. We might regret their somewhat clumsy sequence, but this album, like the singer's solo career in general, is worth listening to. - Official website
