Highly anticipated, like every Australian production, "Made Of Breathe Only" is already the third album of Sleepmakeswaves, a promising spearhead of Australian-style post-rock. But this one is likely to be scrutinized with even more curiosity since the founder of the band, Jonathan Khor has left the ship, replaced by Daniel Oreskovic after the release of the previous opus.

For all that, no musical revolution. The group still officiates in a post-rock style with rich and muscular compositions. This tendency is felt on the first tracks where the atmosphere is close to post metal with aggressive riffs and mixes of clean and heavy guitars. The rhythm section plays an essential role in the band's musical identity. The drums are a centerpiece in a style sometimes close to math-rock à la Toe, omnipresent and integral part of the musical concept as on 'Worlds Away' or on 'Tundra', the latter reminding us of the play of the Spaniards of (almost) the same name: Tundra. Tim Adderley doesn't hesitate to use polyrhythms with impressive dexterity. Associated with Alex Wilson's low tuned and snoring bass, they create a rhythmic roundness in the most upbeat phases.

From 'Made Of Breath Only', the album switches to a more atmospheric rock close to Anathema as the tempo slows down and the electro arrangements take precedence over the purely metallic aspect of the beginning, the second part of 'The Edge Of Everything' or 'Midnight Sun' being perfect examples. The post metal takes its rightful place at the end of the exercise with a 'Glacial' that bears its name well, plunging the listener into a hard and dark coldness, while the acoustic guitar of 'Hailstones' unrolls a soft melancholic and atmospheric conclusion of almost ten minutes, with multiple phases chained together with great fluidity, a very representative reflection of this musical universe beyond rock and modern metal.

In the end, Sleepmakeswaves assumes the departure of its leader. The Australians managed to assimilate all their influences to come out with a perfect synthesis and make their music a unique style where rhythmic construction, melodic research, subtle arrangements and quality of composition are at the rendezvous. The fans of post rock and of a technical and atmospheric post metal will not be disappointed by this "Made Of Breathe Only" which places a little more Sleepmakeswaves not far from the leading pack.

HAREM SCAREM: United (2017)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - With "United", the racy and enthusiastic AOR of "Harem Scarem" is always on the program.
BJORN RIIS: Forever Comes To An End (2017)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - More varied than the previous album, "Forever Comes To An End" is an exercise of style around the sentimental rupture. Disenchanted and fatalistic, Bjorn Riis fades away in favor of the concept while keeping his aura of talented guitarist.
