After a break of more than 20 years, Comedy of Errors seems to have now found its cruising speed and releases in this year 2017 its fourth album since its unexpected comeback in 2011 with the excellent "Disobey".
Presenting an unchanged formation compared to its predecessor "Spirit", "House of the Mind" opens in a very nice way with 'Tachyon', a track that starts gradually and impulse over time syncopated rhythms and a dynamic reminiscent of the Dutch productions of Egdon Heath. The band masters its neo-progressive rock and the atmosphere immediately reminds us of their previous productions.
This will also be the case for one of the two cornerstones of the album: the epic title 'Song of Wandering Jacomus' will indeed take up in an almost identical way the ingredients of 'Spirit', with the same ternary rhythm in 6/8 to welcome the listener in a universe with neat symphonic accompaniments, punctuated by choirs of all kinds and major chords bringing their serene colors to the whole. It's a pity that the long, very long first four minutes where little happens somewhat tarnish this quasi-idyllic picture.
On the other hand, 'House of the Mind', another extended track, sees Comedy of Errors abandoning a neo-progressive classical sound for a while to reach the shores of a seventies music, with an omnipresent Hammond organ, long instrumental parts punctuated by guitar solos, all while preserving a delightful melodic dynamic. The whole is skillfully thought out, and the listener will not see the fifteen minutes go by as the band manages to maintain interest all along.
Alas, it will not be the same for the two shortest tracks of the album which can be described as anecdotal. 'A Moment's Peace' is an uninteresting instrumental based on a gimmick repeated ad nauseam, while 'One Fine Day' and its very poor mix manages to bore the listener in not even three minutes.
A magnificent bonus track will be needed to counterbalance these two little mistakes that could have tarnished the overall impression of an album once again very good, confirming all the quality of the Comedy of Errors, so comfortable in its neo-progressive rock style of the end of the twentieth century. - Official website
