Two years after a magnificent "The Pale Emperor", here is the tenth album of Marilyn Manson. Will this "Heaven Upside Down" confirm the resolutely rock turn begun in 2015? Yes, for the most part.

The Ohio native comes back with 10 incisive tracks like the one already unveiled on video a few weeks before the official release of the album, 'We Know Where You Fucking Live' with a screamed chorus and a destructive riff. The intro 'Revelation 12' is soaked in the same wild rock alloy but with a composition more focused on a devastating groove materialized by a snoring bass that is also found on the funky 'Saturnalia'. From the top of its eight minutes, this last one condenses all Manson's know-how and his ability to brilliantly integrate the electro, blues, groove, rock and psyche elements that he likes, the whole carried by direct and efficient melodies.

The eccentric rocker takes up some of the recipes which made the success of the previous opus on the excellent 'Tattoed In Reverse' which strongly reminds 'Killing Strangers' by its rhythm in jerky mid-tempo, as well as on the hit  'Kill4Me' more pop and freed from the screams. This is not the only track on which Manson is softer in his vocal, so 'Blood Honey' and 'Treads Of Romance' give pride of place to subtle piano arrangements while the melodies bring a welcome variety to his productions.

For the rest, let us note that the themes addressed are in line with the habits of the American whimsical, at the forefront of which is his ambiguous approach to religion which is very present on this album. The lyrics of the hypnotic 'Say10' are an absolute example of this ("You Say God and I Say Satan, ... Is it above, or is it below") and have not finished to maintain his controversial image on this aspect. There are still some elements purely from industrial metal, such as brutal and disturbing arrangements like the rhythm of 'Jesus Crisis', whose lyrics will once again make the most puritanicals of his detractors bristling with indignation.

To sum up, "Heaven Upside Down" is a very well-balanced album, reflecting the creative maturity of an artist, certainly a little more conventional than in his early days, but whose mastery of writing and composition reaches its full potential. It should be a guarantee of success on a par with its predecessor, as the albums present the same balance between rock, blues, indus, metal, rage, softness and authenticity. Manson delivers a high-flying vocal performance and cultivates the Gothic and Antichrist image that made his success. Marilyn does Manson, unsurprisingly this time but with a growing talent.
