After their unexpected comeback to the 21st century spotlight in 2010, OMD have now been going on their already long career at their own pace, returning in 2017 with their 13th studio album, "The Punishment of Luxury".

In their interview with Music Waves at the time of the release of their previous effort, "English Electric", the duo told us that their motivation was above all "novelty and not money". After some electronic drum sounds that remind us of Kraftwerk and their "Electric Café" (we'll come back to that), the question of novelty will be quickly solved from the first notes of "The Punishment of Luxury", the listener finds himself in the band's universe, with keyboards that fill the atmosphere and a simple, immediate melody, full of positive waves conveyed by the frequent use of key modes.

This typical trademark of the band, straight from the 80s, is carried by an ultra-clean production and will be the main thread of the different tracks, among which the dancing 'Art Eats Art', the sulphurous 'Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Bang' or the soothing 'The View From Here' still stand out.

But - and it is perhaps there that the album is going to distinguish itself from its predecessors, and in particular from all the productions of the group since ... "Dazzle Ships" - OMD introduces again in its music more experimental sounds, in the line of its first albums, with a strong evocation of the masters on the matter, namely Kraftwerk. Whether they are the electronic percussions of 'The Punishment of Luxury' and even more of the excellent 'Isotype', the use of arpeggios with keyboards with sounds more than close to those of the Germans on their productions of the 70s of the third track surprisingly entitled 'Robot Man', and even the complete copy of the accompaniment of 'Europe Endless' (on the album "Trans-Europe-Express") on 'What Have We Done', the British duo goes back to the basics of electronic music that saw them emerge on the international scene more than 30 years ago.

So even if some initiatives can appear as time-outs that will risk to be overlooked during repeated listenings ('La Mitrailleuse' and its sounds of the same name, or the birds rustling in the introduction of 'Ghost Star'), the whole brings a relative freshness and allows this new album to be presented as a real synthesis of the band's career.

As we wrote in a previous review, it is unlikely that OMD will ever return to the top of the charts with a single, as strong as those that made their past glory. Nevertheless, it would be advisable not to neglect this new album which, in the line of the two previous ones, presents us a group which is confident of its performance and its art.
