This 3rd album for Dark Suns marks a turning point in the music of the Germans almost unknown at this time of the progressive scene... Indeed, the previous productions and in particular the penultimate one ("Swanlike") had marked the audience with a progressive dark metal at the crossroads between Opeth and Katatonia... This time, "Existence" looks more like Pain of Salvation for which Dark Suns opened for during their last tour.
The album starts with a speech with a scene of laughter and cries of children playing in a courtyard on a rainy day... After having set the scene, Dark Suns takes us to familiar territory since we find the melancholic and tormented progressive metal of the Swedish Pain Of Salvation. Between the particularly catchy melodies, the heavy and jerky riffs of the superb "The Euphoric Senses" and "Her and the Element" or the sadness of the keyboards and the enchanting acoustic guitar of the sublime "Daydream", without forgetting the indispensable talent of a Niko Knappe almost perfect clone of the genius Daniel Gildenlow, the quasi totality of the compositions of the Germans could easily act as a homage to Pain Of Salvation!
The talent of all the members is put at the service of sublime melodies alternating melancholy and nervous passages very inspired ... And even if no track really stands out from the rest, let's still note the masterpieces such as "You, a Phantom Still" where hypnotic heavy riffs are mixed with piano on a background of double pedal or the track that closes this wonderful trip: "One Endless Childish day" ...
"Existence" is clearly intended for the fans of Pain Of Salvation and in particular those who could be disappointed at the time by "Be". As such, Dark Suns avoids the pitfall of the concept album which consists in pushing so far the notion of concept that the listener is disoriented... A band to be discovered urgently ! - Official website
