"Despite some slight innovations, "sexorcism" is not at the same level as its predecessor and seems to favour provocation over inspiration."

With "Monstereophonic" (2016), Lordi was a bit out of his comfort zone by proposing an opus with two faces, one of which was conceptual. Taking risks proved to be profitable since the Finnish monsters had thus offered a peak to their career. With its usual regularity, Rovaniemi's band came back two years later with an album recorded at the legendary Finnvox studios and produced by Mikko Karmila (Amorphis, Children Of Bodom...) who was already behind the controls for "Scare Force One" and had to withdraw at the last moment for "Monstereophonic". Accustomed to puns, Mr. Lordi doesn't change a winning formula with the so-called "Sexorcism" with a cover from a rather dubious taste that we could already find on the video clip of 'Hug You Hardcore' (2016).
This escalation in provocation is not necessarily reassuring, leaving one to fear a make-up aimed at masking a lack of inspiration. Between the visuals, the title and a tracklist announcing tracks with the sweet names of 'Naked In My Cellar', 'The Beast Is Yet To Cum', 'Polterchrist' or 'Sodomesticated Animal', there's enough to traumatize puritans and other fundamentalists of all kinds, not to mention souls too sensitive to appreciate this form of humour. Yet, once again, it would be unfair to confine the quintet to monster disguises within the simple limits of its imagery. Over more than an hour, Lordi demonstrates his art once again, multiplying the hyper catchy choruses and offering a production that is both clear and powerful.
The melodies and the energy go well together and the tempi and ambiences are varied, sometimes even within the same title ('Sexorcism', 'Your Tongue's Got The Cat'). Mr. Lordi takes a few risks by throwing himself into high-pitched vocals worthy of Udo Dirkschneider ('The Beast Is Yet To Cum' almost thrashy), while the last two newcomers in the line-up prove the interest of their recruitment. Hella offers a wide variety of moods behind her keyboards ('Romeo Ate Juliet', 'Haunting Season') while Mana proves his technique and velocity ('The Beast Is Yet To Cum', 'Sodomesticated Animal'). Unfortunately, the second part, after a very good start, tends to keep the same tempo despite a 'Rimskin Assasin' led at full pace and crushing everything in its path.
Despite some slight innovations, this new opus proves to be a step back from its predecessor. Lordi would probably have gained by concentrating his speech on a shorter duration instead of letting his efficiency fade away on a few more dispensable tracks. As for the evolution towards a provocation of dubious taste, there is a good chance that it might put off some people. However, there remains a beautiful collection of unstoppable and quality tracks that will delight fans of the Finnish quintet. - Official website
