Cherry Red Records via its label Lemon re-released in February in a "Deluxe double CD" version simultaneously "Twin Barrels Burning" (originally released in 1982) and "Raw to the Bone" (1985) by the famous English rock band Wishbone Ash. When "Twin Barrels Burning" was released in 1982, Wishbone Ash was in a turbulent period of its history. After the departure at the end of 1980 of its historic bassist and singer Martin Turner, also founder of the band, Wishbone Ash experienced the short stint of John Wetton to replace him for the time of an album ("Number the Brave" - 1981) before he joined the ranks of Asia. Trevor Bolder, who broke with Uriah Heep (whose road he would soon cross again), took over the role of bass player-singer for the recording of "Twin Barrels Burning".
He joins a band that has been suffering from personality problems for a few years, seemingly torn between his own aspirations and his desire for recognition. The original sound, a balanced mix of rock, hard rock and folk ballads, sprinkled on the first albums with a few progressive pinches became little by little a more commercial rock. In the same way, the vocal harmonies and the original presence of two lead guitars mixing with a magical grace their melodies have given way to classic solo vocals and lead guitar/rhythm guitar couple.
"Twin Barrels Burning" doesn't reverse the trend: the vocal harmonies are almost absent, Andy Powell, Laurie Wisefield and Trevor Bolder taking turns as singer. As for the twin guitars, their presence is only present for one track, 'Hold On'. That doesn't mean that the record is bad. This one is a concentrate of energy balancing a very classical but nevertheless very pleasant hard rock, which makes you want to shake your head and beat your foot all the way through.
The first CD includes the remastered version of the album with three bonus tracks, including the excellent 'Night Hawker', a wild hard rock blues that shows a Wishbone Ash in top of his shape and makes you wonder why it wasn't on the original record. The second CD features the remixed American version of the album. The tracks appear in a different order, the only notable change from the originals being a rawer sound. A slight difference that reserves this second volume for the band's fans.
"Twin Barrels Burning" in its Deluxe version could interest all the lovers of melodic hard rock as well as the hard die fans of the band who will certainly be pleased to own the American remixes unreleased so far. - Official website
