Ten years in today's music industry has become an eternity. Nowadays, in order to live, or even survive, bands have to be regularly present on social networks and productive, sometimes even if it means putting quantity before quality. It is however this time period that separates "Slipway Fires" from "Olympus Sleeping" the new album of Razorlight, author of the soft rock called 'America' or the more indie 'Can't Stop The Feeling That I've Got' between 2006 and 2008. The band, labeled indie rock, put its career on hold for Johnny Borrell to take a step back from a rise that was dazzling and at the same time perhaps too heavy to carry.
Razorlight rebuilt a team around him by integrating Martin Chambers (The Pretenders) on drums. The rhythm thus take a rather enormous dimension on this album. The bass is incredibly highlighted in the first two tracks ('Got To Let The Good Times Back Into Your Life', 'Razorchild') which will set the tone for an album which, until its end, proves to be incredibly positive and radiant, just the opposite of the cover.
Where indie rock is occasionally darker, Razorlight takes the opposite gamble, putting a smile on the listener's face with a few energic and rather playful tracks. Johnny's talent is not to pour into sweet and marshmallowy pop while keeping a rock ancestry. Leaving the electro effects aside, the recomposed band affirms its love for everything that has been built up over the years by its elders and which it is now championing in this new album. All the tracks have a rock backbone around which Johnny's band will graft a joyful pop ('Carry Yourself') with some touches of ska ('Brighton Pier'), or a more raw nervousness carried by sharp riffs ('Japanrock').
So here's a rather successful comeback for Razorlight, a love letter to rock and pop, which allows its acutely flayed leader to express his emotions. A return to the light with this "Olympus Sleeping", a collection of fresh and immediate titles made to tap his foot. - Official website
