If, despite the rave reviews of their four previous albums, you still don't know Sylvan, "Posthumous Silence" is a new chance to fill this gap. Since its beginnings, this band has never ceased to offer us quality albums, succeeding, while keeping its identity, to improve and evolve from year to year. "Posthumous Silence" is no exception to the rule and proves to be - once again for the band - an absolutely unavoidable work.

Making a concept album is a difficult exercise. You have to be able to convey emotions and bits of history through the music and lyrics and avoid pitfalls such as long, boring dialogues or songs that don't stick to the lyrics. Needless to say, Sylvan gets off with disconcerting ease...

The first two tracks set the mood with some sound effects as an introduction followed by choruses in a very Hollywood style for an impeccable introduction... And it's 70 minutes of happiness that begins....

The regulars won't be out of place because the style - between intimate and nervous rock - of the band is recognizable from the third track, starting gently with a piano melody and slowly increasing in power ...

All the talent of the musicians, both in composition and performance, is brought to light. How can one fail to marvel at the efficiency of the melodies, at the recognizable repetitions of the theme which are so different that it is always difficult to know where it has already been heard, at the transitions which are so perfect that track changes go unnoticed?

The findings don't stop there. "Posthumous Silence" is full of prodigious shots (Pane of Truth), good ideas such as the addition of violin or samples (dialogues, arguments, birds) that add life to the ensemble or even some symphonic aspects of the most beautiful effect. Vocals is always as imperial and a source of emotion in the low and high notes. Finally, it is necessary to underline the work carried out on the sonorities which are sometimes very current and which should prevent this work from ageing too quickly...

All the ingredients of progressive rock come together in the most natural osmosis. Sweetness and aggressiveness, nervousness and melancholy, paradoxes come together to bring us pleasure and shivers... Sylvan almost succeeded in composing the album I would have liked to hear...

OTHER REVIEWS
THE FLOWER KINGS: Paradox Hotel (2006)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - The Flower Kings' music is demanding and moreover this "paradox hotel" is really too long... To be reserved for the band's fans.
SAGA: Trust (2006)
ROCK - Back to the roots for Saga? Certainly, and this "Trust" will remind the good old time when "Worlds Apart" was at the top of the charts.
