"Evergrey's "The Atlantic" is the kind of progressive metal album you only hear a handful of times a decade."

Well, I hear the next Evergrey is part of a trilogy. Yes, that's true, but it's already the third part of this trilogy that began in 2014 with "Hyms For The Broken" and continued two years ago with "The Storm Within". Surprise! Surprise! "The Atlantic" this time depicts the transition to a personality changes or how to become someone else through the trials that life imposes on us, a logical continuation of the concept of the first two opuses.
Rarely has Evergrey shown so much power at all levels. The power of sound is characterized by a man, Jacob Hansen, who, behind the controllers, cuts the sound, mixes and shakes it all to bring us a huge production. Jonas Ekdahl even says that Hansen is part of the band in his own right because his work is such an integral part of their music, and, when listening, we can only agree with him.
The drummer is the second example of the power of the Scandinavians with a capital performance. Without overusing the double pedal, his playing is remarkable on rhythms that are sometimes frantic or syncopated ('Weightless','My Secret Atlantic') that bring a touch of thrash or black metal to some passages. If "heavy" is an adjective that has always suited the band for 20 years, the riffs of this ocean of decibels are monstrous in depth and intensity and their variety highlights the talent of Henrik Danhage on all fronts, huge riffs, sharp rhythms and twirling soli.
Melodic power, finally, embodied by Tom Englund, at the top of his art. The man may have multiplied his participation in many projects or albums (too many to mention here), he gives the full measure of his writing talent with Evergrey producing melodies tailored in an alloy that vibrates to make you shiver. The warmth of its timbre, its power and a sharp sense of melody hit every note, even when the tempo softens on 'End Of Silence', or 'All I Have'. Theses ones are nevertheless striking, the subtle keyboards are more identifiable and show how Rikard Zander manages to wrap the Swedish sound in a discreet and essential setting. Special mention also to Johan Niemann whose bass work fits perfectly throughout the album, but often remains discreet, except on "Departure", power ballad cut to highlight it and on which he makes his five tuned strings snoring so low that it will make your woofers vibrate with pleasure.
You will have understood that "The Atlantic" perfectly combines the ingredients of an exceptional album, which closes a Dantean triptych and seals a key piece of the Swedish combo. Goldsmith production, epic power and immediate melodies combine with the state of grace of the five friends who know each other by heart and whose pleasure in writing and playing together is perceptible at all times. On a background of progressive metal, Evergrey signs with "The Atlantic" an album like only a very few are heard in a decade.
